Best Areas in the Algarve for Families
Lagos, Tavira or Vilamoura? A practical guide to choosing the right Algarve area for your family — schools, safety, community and lifestyle.
Choosing where to settle in the Algarve as a family is one of the most consequential decisions of a Portugal relocation. The region stretches 150km from the Spanish border to Sagres, and the lifestyle — pace, community, cost, schooling — varies enormously from west to east, coast to inland.
Here is a frank breakdown of the most popular areas for English and German-speaking expat families.
Lagos — The Expat Sweet Spot
Lagos is consistently the most popular choice for English and German-speaking families. The reasons are clear: a large, established expat community, excellent beaches within walking distance, a charming historic old town, and a scale that feels manageable without being isolated.
Schools: Lagos has several private and international-oriented schools, including bilingual options. The local state schools are mixed in quality but improving. Many expat families use private Portuguese schools (colégio) which offer better facilities and more parent engagement.
Cost: Higher than Portimão or Tavira. Rents in central Lagos start at €1,000–€1,400 for a 3-bed. The western Algarve premium is real but justified by lifestyle quality.
Community: Strong Facebook groups, regular expat meetups, English-speaking doctors, dentists, and service providers in good supply. German speakers will find a smaller but well-established community.
Downsides: Tourism pressure in summer — July and August, the town changes character. Parking is difficult year-round.
Tavira — Authentic and Underrated
Tavira is the quiet alternative — and for many families, the right one. It has one of the most beautiful historic centres in the Algarve, genuine Portuguese character, and significantly lower costs than the western Algarve.
Schools: Smaller selection than Lagos. Some families drive to Faro or use distance learning for international curricula. The state schools here are considered better than average for the Algarve.
Cost: Rents are typically 20–30% lower than Lagos. A comfortable family home can be found for €800–€1,100/month.
Community: Smaller but tight-knit expat community. Growing, particularly post-2022. The German-speaking presence here is disproportionately large relative to other Algarve towns.
Downsides: Less infrastructure for international families. Fewer English-speaking specialists. The trade-off is authentic Portuguese life — which for many is precisely the point.
Vilamoura — Upscale and International
Vilamoura is a purpose-built resort town centred around one of Europe's largest marinas. It is the most affluent address in the Algarve and attracts a wealthy international crowd — largely British and Northern European, with a strong golf culture.
Schools: The international school landscape is better here than elsewhere, including proximity to the Nobel International School in Vilamoura itself. For families requiring a full international IB or British curriculum, this is the strongest option in the region.
Cost: The most expensive area in the Algarve. Family rents start at €1,800–€2,500+. Buying starts well above €500,000 for family-sized properties.
Community: Large, wealthy, English-dominant. Less "expat community feel" and more "resort community". Less integration with Portuguese life.
Downsides: Artificial atmosphere outside of peak season. Expensive for everyday living. If you're not a golfer or marina lifestyle person, it may feel constraining.
Portimão & Ferragudo — Central and Practical
Portimão is the Algarve's second-largest city and its most practical base. It has real Portuguese urban life — supermarkets, hospitals, retail, services — without the tourist overlay that Lagos and Albufeira carry in summer.
Neighbouring Ferragudo is one of the Algarve's genuinely charming villages: whitewashed houses, a small beach, castle views, and a more authentic pace. The two together make a compelling combination.
Cost: Good value. 3-bed apartments in Portimão from €850–€1,100/month. Ferragudo villas are pricier but below Vilamoura levels.
Schools: Similar to Lagos in quality and range. The central location means easier access to schools across the region.
Best for: Families who want practical day-to-day living, don't mind a less "curated" expat scene, and want to stay central.
The Verdict
There is no single right answer — but there is usually a right answer for your family.
- Young children, want community, flexible on cost: Lagos
- Authentic Portugal, lower cost, adult children or teens: Tavira
- International school essential, budget not primary concern: Vilamoura
- Want practical urban base, central location: Portimão
Whichever area you choose, the Algarve's fundamentals remain: 300 days of sunshine, genuine safety, excellent beaches, and a Portuguese way of life that — once found — is difficult to leave.
