Why Tavira?

Tavira is consistently voted the most beautiful town in the Algarve — and it is hard to argue. Two medieval bridges cross the Gilão river into an old town of Roman ruins, Moorish castle walls, 37 churches (more than any other Algarve town), and grand 18th-century merchant palaces. It is the one town in the region where Portuguese life — the morning coffee, the fish market, the evening passeio — is not a performance for tourists but simply how things are.

The eastern Algarve coastline around Tavira is protected within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and access to the beach involves a short ferry or water taxi to the barrier island — a ritual that keeps crowds lower and water quality higher than anywhere on the central coast. Ilha de Tavira is one of the finest beaches in Portugal.

The expat community is smaller and quieter than Lagos or Albufeira — which is exactly why people choose it. Mostly over-40s, often couples or retirees, drawn by the cultural richness, the food (Tavira's restaurants are among the best in the region for traditional Portuguese cuisine), and the absence of the party scene. The German-speaking community is notably strong in the eastern Algarve.

Property prices have risen sharply since 2019 as buyers discovered the town. A restored old-town house with a patio costs €300,000–€700,000. Modern villas on the outskirts start at €250,000. Faro Airport is 30 minutes west on the EN125 or A22. The train stops in Tavira with connections to both Faro and Spain (Vila Real de Santo António is 20 minutes east, with a ferry to Ayamonte).
