Living Guide
Why Alvor?
Alvor sits where the Alvor estuary meets the Atlantic, and it is this geography that defines the town. To the west is a 4km sweep of dune-backed beach — one of the cleanest in the western Algarve. Behind the town, the Ria de Alvor lagoon system is a Natura 2000 protected area and one of the most important shorebird habitats in Portugal: godwits, flamingos, spoonbills and waders overwinter here in their thousands. The boardwalk trail around the lagoon is one of the finest short walks in the Algarve.
The old fishing village at the heart of Alvor retains its character: narrow lanes, tiled facades, a small harbour, and a cluster of seafood restaurants whose quality consistently outpunches their size. The cataplana at Restaurante Carcavelos, the clams at any number of tiny tascas on the main square — Alvor's food scene is the best-kept secret in the western Algarve.
The international community is a mix of retirees (strongly British and German) and younger families who appreciate the relative affordability compared to Lagos, 10 minutes to the east. The Alvor estuary separates the town from Meia Praia beach to the north, which is accessible only by road via Portimão or by kayak — a journey that keeps Meia Praia's beach uncrowded even in high season.
Property ranges from village apartments and townhouses (€180,000–€350,000) to newer villas on the residential outskirts with pool and lagoon views (€450,000–€750,000). The town has a health centre, pharmacy, minimarket, fish market and weekly market. Portimão hospital is 10 minutes; Faro Airport is 45 minutes.
