Why Monchique?

Monchique sits in the Serra de Monchique, a mountain range that rises to 900 metres above the coastal plain — cooling by 5–8°C in summer, occasionally frosting in winter, and generating its own microclimate of springs, streams and dense forest that feels nothing like the bleached hillsides of the coast below. Fóia (902m), the highest point in the Algarve, is a 15-minute drive from town and offers a panoramic view south to the Atlantic and north to the Alentejo plains.

The thermal springs at Caldas de Monchique — known to the Romans as Mons Cicus — have been a retreat for royalty and the well-heeled for centuries. The spa resort at the valley floor offers therapeutic bathing, treatments and accommodation, and the town around it has cafés, a craft market, and a reputation for medronho (arbutus brandy) that locals and visitors compete to claim as the best in the region.

Monchique attracts a very specific kind of buyer: people who have deliberately decided that the coast is not the point. Artists, writers, people in search of genuinely clean air and silence, smallholders growing their own food, and retirees who prioritise landscape over convenience. The community is small, multilingual (English, German and Dutch residents are common), and protective of what makes Monchique different.

Property is the most affordable in the Algarve: village houses from €80,000, rural quintas with land from €150,000, renovated properties with mountain views from €250,000. The trade-off is remoteness — Portimão is 30 minutes, the coast is 40 minutes, and mountain roads require a confident driver. For those for whom this is a feature rather than a problem, Monchique is one of the most rewarding places to live in the entire Algarve region.
