Living Guide
Why Lagoa?
Lagoa is the inland market town that sits at the geographic heart of the western Algarve, equidistant from Lagos to the west and Albufeira to the east. It is the choice of expats who have discovered that living 10 minutes from the coast, rather than on it, means significantly lower property prices, quieter streets, easier parking, and a more genuinely Portuguese daily life.
The municipality of Lagoa includes the coastal villages of Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Estombar and Porches — meaning Lagoa town residents can reach multiple beaches within 15 minutes without paying beach-town property prices. The weekly market (Monday) is one of the best in the region: local produce, fresh fish, ceramics and olives at prices that remind you why you moved to Portugal.
Lagoa is also the wine municipality of the Algarve. The Adega Cooperativa de Lagoa, founded in 1944, produces medal-winning regional wines including the celebrated Afonso III red. Wine tourism, combined with the nearby ceramics tradition of Porches (Olaria Algarve, Porches Pottery), gives the area a cultural depth that purely coastal towns lack.
Property is the most affordable in the western central Algarve: village houses with character from €110,000, new-build townhouses from €200,000, and villas with pools from €300,000. The Lagoa municipality has its own health centre, secondary school, and sports complex. It is 8 minutes to Portimão for the hospital, 35 minutes to Faro Airport.
